Chapter 11

Charlotte pulled up in front of Freely Lakes.

“I don’t think either of us thought this would turn into such a long journey.” Ally stretched her arms above her head.

“But at least we got somewhere.” Charlotte smiled at her.

“Did we?” Ally opened her car door. “I feel like we only learned about how miserable of a person Mel was, and how poorly he treated his wife.”

“Maybe, but that tells us more about him, doesn’t it?” Charlotte got out of the car.

“It’s a start.” Ally walked around the car and got into the driver’s seat.

“It is. Speak tomorrow.” Charlotte waved.

Ally made sure her grandmother was inside the retirement community before she drove toward the cottage. She pulled into the driveway excited to see Arnold and Peaches.

Ally walked up to her front door. As she started to unlock it, another car pulled into the driveway. She smiled as she saw Luke step out of the car.

“You have a few free minutes?” Ally greeted him with a light kiss on the cheek.

“I’m not sure how much time I have, but I’m currently waiting on some information to come back.” Luke followed her inside the cottage and laughed as Arnold and Peaches demanded to be greeted. “Hi, little ones.” He crouched down to pet them both. “Look how happy they are to see me.” He smiled as Arnold rubbed against his hand. “I didn’t think I’d ever get used to that, and now I look forward to it.”

“They think you’re going to give them treats.” Ally grinned as she set down her purse.

“That’s because I am.” Luke fished a few treats out of his pocket and gave them to Peaches and Arnold.

“Come into the kitchen, I’ll grab you something to eat.” Ally headed for the kitchen.

“No.” Luke caught her hand. “No thanks, I’ve had plenty to eat, I just want some time with you. Can we just sit for a little while?”

“Sure.” Ally’s heart melted as he pulled her down onto the couch beside him. She loved it when he just wanted to be with her. It reminded her that he didn’t expect anything from her. “How are you?”

“Tired.” Luke draped his arm around her. “But better now that I’m here with you.”

“Me too.” Ally snuggled closer to him.

“Okay, fine ask.” Luke rolled his eyes and smiled.

“What?” Ally did her best to look innocent.

“I know that you want to know about Mel’s murder.”

“I do.” Ally met his eyes. “Anything new?”

“Nothing groundbreaking, unfortunately. The only thing we found out is that Mel’s wine cabinet wasn’t broken into, Alicia said that Mel had come in to empty the cabinet, on the morning he was murdered. She left a note on Benson’s desk because he was out but he never saw it." Luke snuggled her closer.

“Oh, so he emptied it out, at least it wasn’t stolen.” Ally frowned. “I wonder why?”

“Maybe he just wanted to drink the wine? Or he was planning on leaving?” Luke took her hand in his free hand. “We did find Mel’s briefcase. It was found in the area near his body.
